Jazell, one of the Good Folks of Rabbittrun, Texas
(mental picture: nice lookin’ chicken, great dress, fur stole, lots of jewelry)
Jazell lives over on Lotus Street. Gossip is that she’s had plastic surgery, several times. Nobody knows for sure. But she never seems to age. Even with all those late nights she keeps. She does have a busy social life, and so many men friends. Jazell says she just loves them all, church ladies say she’s a hussy. One thing everybody agrees on, she does have a good time.
Last summer she flew off to one of them places that’s got beaches and those palm trees. Can’t remember the name, but she’s been everywhere, and always with a different man. She’s real popular. Why, the mailman delivers at least a dozen letters and cards every day, (he’s one of her greatest admirers).
She usually gets flowers or candy at least once a day. Before she goes out at night, (she goes out every night), you can see her through her bedroom window sitting in the middle of her four poster canopy bed, readin’ all the love letters she got that day.
Did I tell you how she decorated her house? You’re gonna love this. The bed is done in a deep red satin. Jazell says it’s so inspirational. When the whole town kept gossipin’ bout her, she redid the windows. You guessed it! She had large plate glass windows put in every room. Now maybe they’ll get the facts straight. She not only does her own decoratin’, she also designs her own clothes. Needless to say, she’s a multi talented girl.
She just couldn’t find clothes to do her justice, or show off her legs. All the men tell her she has such wonderful legs, which she does. She’s not as bad as everybody says. Jazell can’t help it if every man that lays eyes on her falls instantly in love. She tries not to encourage them, but she can’t help bein’ so gorgeous. And besides, she’s just a naturally friendly person.

These are definitely folk art. All the color, craziness. I do love hearts…. and chickens. OK, I admit it. I love whatever I’m working on. These are fun to do. I’ll be putting a couple a day on my Etsy Store for the next several days. I’ve been neglecting that spot. And they’ll be on the Folk Art Gallery Online page here. Got to get it in gear!

Did these today! The 3 larger ones are on board, smaller 3 are stretched canvas. No, really it is. I think I may put those on a board, since they’re too small for a hanger. Got to get more of those tiny canvases. They are fun to paint. I’ve been on a heart thing lately. They just make me feel good.
All of these were painted with heavy matte acrylic by Golden. Then I used a Faber-Castille pen, and Prisma colored pencils. Then a spray sealer. I get the matte heavy acrylic from www.dickblick.com. I don’t like shiny paint when I working. All I see is glare. Everyone works different. You just keep experimenting until you find what works for you. If it works… it’s not wrong. That’s how to develop a style, a look. Knowing what works for you.
OK, time to scrub this paint off. Can’t wait to start a new painting tomorrow. Oh, I forgot. When I get these finished, ready to hang, they’ll be on my Etsy store. xoxoxo

This is the one of the first chickens I carved. Must of been 25 or more years ago. She’s sitting in the bottom part of a nail keg. Took me forever to carve. Had to distress her, so the woman buying her would know she was carved from wood. A cranky old woman.
I did more of these, not this big, put them in wash pans. I always had a pet chicken when I was a kid. Come to think of it, I still do. Does that mean I’m still a kid? xx PJ

Ethel is staring in her own movie. Ya gotta see her. She’s a natural. She didn’t even have to rehearse. She knew her lines, and wasn’t fussy about her hair. A natural born star… Watch for more videos of her on YouTube. xo, PJ

Yes, this is life in the country… you have a chicken for a best friend. It started out that I had a chicken for a pet. Now Ethel is my new best friend. I think it switched over a couple of weeks ago when I feed Ethel bread on the front porch. Really good bread. Something like 9 grain stuff. She loved it. So today I was sitting on the steps, that’s when she decided she needed a really close look at my new camera. Couldn’t help the half a head shot. The more I raised the camera, the longer her neck got. She really wants to peck my Crocks. She’s fasinated by the holes. When I went in to get the bread, I must of left the door open. She was coming in as I got to the door. That last photo is her doing her nails. She takes great pride in her nails. Never dirty.
You can have a new best friend if you want. I had chickens in the city. Just don’t get anything that crows…. xo PJ

The Crow Talkin’ to the Moon… well, they have a lot to discuss. There’s the decorations to be done, the big black pot to be heated by fire… where’s those spiders at? There needs to be cobwebs from here to there. All the ghosts must be asleep, time to wake them! They have their duties to attend. Did I tell you how much I love Halloween? My very favorite holiday. I always had a great costume, and had more fun that anyone. Then when my kids were small, it was even more fun. Now we’re trying to start again. Last year was a blast. Gotta get busy on the cementary. I neeeed a cementary…
Yes, that is a blue kinda turquoise chicken. They do come in other colors you know. Just cause you haven’t seen one, doesn’t mean they don’t exists. (note: I do creative spelling) Geraldine has decided to set in the middle of the yard. She owns it, she can if she wants…
The other two are roosters on canvas board/ mounted on board. I made prints from these. These are the originals, read to hang. xoxo PJ

Here they are! All nicely dressed, ready to travel. Of coarse I’m cross eyed from painting all those dots… There’s 7 of them, but not everybody wanted to pose. Sooo, if you asked for little chickens, this is it. (these I did in clay) I’ll be working on other stuff for the month of Sept.
I’m doing the Folk Art Fair & Creative Market in Round Top, Texas ~ Oct. 1,2,3, & 4th. (hwy.237) hope to see ya there!
My Folk Art Gallery in Carmine (hwy.290) will be open also! Busy time for all. And so much fun! Let’s pray, cross your fingers, throw salt over your shoulder, spit in the wind, I don’t care what it is, but it better be cooler!

A bunch of chickens needing spots. They’re NAKED!
This is backwards. I talked about these earlier today, now I’m showing you the picture. It’s that kind of day…
Tomorrow they’re getting a little color.
I’ll post a new photo when they’re dressed…
proper…

Just got back from Austin, and a Central Market fix. Loooove that place. So inspiring, if you like to cook. But I was good, didn’t buy EVERYTHING I saw. A good friend & I did the camera store fix first, then had great tortilla soup at CMrkt. Yum! Got to eat before you shop for food, it’s the rule.
sorry, I’m sold
Tomorrow I HAVE to get back in the studio. I have 7 clay chickens waiting for some color in their life. Got to get those babies painted… they’re naked. Yep, I’m back to clay. My shoulder doesn’t want to carve right now, so that’s that. I swear the clay takes me longer than carving does. Maybe because I wash my hands every 5 minutes. That clay gets every where.
So keep your fingers crossed I get those chickens DONE! I’m ready to do something new! Maybe a Santa, or something…. take care, be happy, & and share a giggle with somebody…..
