Back in 1986 or so….when I was a mere child… I did these dolls… they all came from this weird little town…. Rabbittrun, Texas. Each one was a real character. Since I sometimes used personalities of people I knew… and didn’t wanna be sued… The dolls ended up being animal people. That way, no one could say… you made that one look just like me… and I’ll see you in court! Making sense? Well, it will when you read a few of the stories.
Yesterday, while spending the day with a friend, I was telling her about a few of the Good Folks of Rabbittrun, Texas. She thought it’d be a good idea to put some on my blog. So if you hate ‘em… let me know…. I’ll send you Patsy’s info and you can complain directly to her. Second hand is just never as good as when you can speak directly to the person that had this idea…. big smile….
Yes, I did a book kinda thing. Made it myself. Published it myself. That means I took it to quick copy, brought all those pages home and built the darn thing. And it’s copyrighted… so don’t be making your Christmas cards out of what I wrote. Make up your own lies. You can do it…
Imogene
(get a mental image of a big ol’ giraffe with an ugly dress on)
You see that rather large woman goin’ in the 5 & dime? No, the one with the large purse. Yes, that’s the one. Well, that’s Imogene, the town’s one and only shoplifter. Yes, it is sad. It’s not that she takes that much, or anything worth much. She just always takes a little somethin’ everywhere she stops. Why, she took the knob right off the Church’s front door. Everybody was real upset over that one. You ‘ll notice that her dress has real big pockets.
For awhile there, all the street signs were missin’. They made Imogene give them back. Didn’t hurt her feelings, she’ll get them back. I know what you’re thinkin’. Yes we tried to get her help. Even took her to one of those fancy doctors. I think he was a physcitarist… anyway, he charged way too much. You can always tell how fancy they are by how much they charge. Why, the town had a bake sale, car wash, and just out and out begged for the money to pay him. You should have seen that bill, it went on forever. Anyway, we got her there (and all paid up, I might add.) He hadn’t seen her three times before he refused to see her anymore. She bout stole him blind. Why, she even made off with the potted plant, and the pen set right off his desk. She was goin’ for the desk when he said he’d had enough. Said it was the worst case he’d ever seen. He still doesn’t know she took the light switch, we didn’t have the heart to tell him.
And Imogene kinda liked him. That’s why she left him his shoes. That’s always her favorite thing to take. She likes to think of it as collectin’. She does have a rather large collection of shoes… takes up one whole room. She’s not selfish, though, she’ll let you borrow a pair, if you promise to bring them back….

The Hornberger family is in need of a front yard fence. Herbert, the big 5lb. Chihuahua, has stepped up his guard duty. Not sure why, maybe cause he’s learned to hike his leg higher… had to, the grass needed to be mowed….
So now he’s decided he can take down that big truck with a cattle trailer that goes by our house on a regular basis. Richard almost had a stroke… Came straight in the house and told on Herbert. Herbert had his little chest all stuck out. The little fool.
I was all set to build flower beds… I got dirt. Really nice loamy dirt. So excited about my dirt. I’ve always had flowers, herbs, etc. This house was/is in need of so much love/$ flower beds/dirt wasn’t on the list.. or not very high on the list. But if you whine loud, long, and often… things will happen. I got dirt for my birthday! Two big piles/14 yds.
Now that super dawg thinks he’s The Mexican Godzilla… I gotta have a fence first. The little jerk. And to think I cook for him. Yes, I’m a fool. He’s so skinny, plays with dry dog food, so I cook chicken and rice. He has not gained an ounce. NaDa… It’s just not working.
Back to the fence…. guess that’s the next thing on the list. It’s gotta be cute… the house is so ugly… the fence has to be cute. OK, maybe it’s not REAL ugly…. I just love old houses. Truly love them. Richard tolerates them. They have a soul. They talk to you in the middle of the night. They move an inch this way or that way.. and give you a surprise. Like our bathroom door. It has shut for 4 years…. it no longer does that. Surprise! (snort, giggle) Who cares…. The house will shift, the door will close. TaDah!
And yes, old houses have ghosts. Real ones. No, not really spooky. Not when you realize they’re not going to hurt you. Sometimes you see ‘em… sometimes you don’t. I prefer the ones that I don’t see. It’s just a preference… :) Smart dogs or cats can tell you when they’re around. Herbert does a low growl, stands real stiff, doesn’t take his eyes off of the spot. Shirley gets spooked. She gets in a crouching position… then under the nearest furniture. Nope, I don’t watch the ghost shows on TV. In front of a camera, people will do almost anything.
Time for me to get in the studio. Ya’ll have a great day! It’s Monday… let’s get this show on the road…

This was a lazy Sunday. No art, just played on Facebook…. I did learn some things about a new paint I want to try. Facebook is so good for that. I try to friend as many artists as possible. Post a question, and someone will give you what they know about it. What generous people.
A big fat nap was required today. Herbert needed it badly… so I had to go along with the idea. That dog works hard harassing Shirley the cat. He needs his rest. Now we have a stray kitten. So far it’s not requiring petting, but I’m working on him. At least he’ll eat cat food.
R made crunchy tacos for supper. Oh, soooo gooood! You know how you get hungry for a certain taste? I’m fat and happy! He got the seasoning perfect. I’m not crazy about Taco seasoning… so we do it from scratch. Taco Snobs! eek!
OK, I’m done.. roll me over. Hope you had a positive weekend… everything you wanted it to be. Now make this week something you’ll be proud of. Share your good mood. Share a giggle… they’re contagious. Decide to be happy. It’s your choice!
When you’re just so terribly bored….
and thanks for reading my craziness…
It’s required in Texas to put entirely too many words in every sentence… did you know that? Well, it’s the God’s Honest Truth. And you’re required to tell big fat lies every chance you get. Yes, we have weird laws… but we’re happy!

OK, I confess… I haven’t been in the paint in days. Yes, it is sad. If fact, you might want to read really fast, cause I think I’m gonna whine. My whiner is tuned up today. No, don’t need the violin for a pity party. You wouldn’t be able to hear it…. I whine really loud.
It’s my ears’ fault… yep, it’s not me, it’s the ear. The right one, you might know. It has taken on a life of it’s own. I on the other hand, have tried and tried to be responsible, do the right thing. To no avail… (that word works there, doesn’t it?)
Called the Dr. got meds, took every last pill. I did not miss a pill. See what I’m getting at? I did my part. Well, it seems the ear didn’t like that at all. I’m guessing that’s it, because the meds didn’t do a thing for the EAR ACHE. It should have worked. But no… the ear is not having any of that.
So now that ear, the one on the right side of my head, has decided I need just a touch of vertigo. Oh, yes… that lovely stuff. Don’t bend over, you’ll do a flip. Watch that wall, it’ll move on you. Just a tad sea sick? Things out of sorts? Stomach just waiting for that moment you’ve been dreading? See what I mean? It’s the ear! I would do none of that stuff to myself. Never!
No, I can’t. Cutting it off won’t do a thing for the vertigo. I don’t care if that crazy artist did it. I am perfectly sane, I tell you! If I did that, the ear would win. Never! Did I mention this stuff makes you sleepy? Soooo sleepy… The more you move around, the worse the ear makes it.
Didn’t I warn you that I was whiney? But it’s not my fault…. it’s the ear…. the one on the right side…

Not entirely sure what I’ve been doing this past week. Didn’t accomplish much, that’s for sure. Summer colds are the worst. Seems like they just keep on giving.
So today is a new day. Got my paint clothes on, Herbert’s up, Shirley is feeding her face, as usual. I have a painting waiting to be finished. That’s going to happen today. Then another one waiting to be started. It’s going to be a cat & rooster kinda day.
Or something like that.
If UPS doesn’t bring my supplies today, I’m gonna be very disappointed. I haven’t shipped thru them in awhile. This time they had several selections… very slow, kinda slow, almost fast, and really fast. I think I picked almost fast. Must of underlined the almost. Oh, their service is fine, the people that deliver are the nicest around. I just want my art supplies NOW! Right now.
Now I’m happy. The guy just delivered my dirt! Looks like really good dirt. I let Ethel out so she can check it for bugs. Now I can have flower beds, and some more flower beds. And level out the front yard. I’ve only tripped twice stepping in those holes to China.
Ok, now to get in the studio. Make your day creative, whatever you have to do. And smile at somebody… it could make their day. hugs, PJ

Part of a painting I’m working on. Moses Parting the Sea. I’ve painted this idea a couple of times, but it always comes out different, making each one an original. I saw one similar by an artist from the 1800′s. Now I can’t remember the name, or where I saw it.
I wouldn’t consider painting a living/contemporary artist’s work. That is totally wrong. But occasionally I have used a well known artist from the past. It ends up looking like my work. I’m not good at copying/reproducing someone else’s art. I have my own look, my way of seeing it. Copying isn’t art, it’s craftmanship. And tacky.
The biggest challenge in art is coming up with the idea, a good idea. It’s a creative process. It’s hard work. Sometimes it comes to you easily, like a wonderful present, with a pretty bow. That does not happen often. There are those funky spaces of time that you’re convinced you were just lucky. It’s gone, never to return. Every artist has experienced it, doesn’t matter what your medium is. It’s not fun. You never know how long it will last… you start to doubt yourself…
Then again there are the fun times when ideas are coming at you from everywhere. You can’t sleep because you’re doing art in your head. Can’t turn it off. I always want to work faster so I can get to more of the ideas.
Don’t want to take time to do anything but art. Can’t be bothered by that everyday stuff. Ha! I don’t take time for lunch… I eat while I paint or sand or sculpt or sketch. I live in paint clothes, and resent it if I have to change to look like everyone else. Who cares anyway?
I’m always suspicious of a so-called “artist” that has combed hair, clean clothes, or jewelry on. Oh, sure they’re an artist….
Go see what this artist has been doing… PJ Hornberger Folk Art Have a great weekend! Do something fun… share a smile with someone… a compliment would be nice too. Doesn’t cost a thing, but is worth a lot. xo

Moving slow this morning. I have a cold in July. I’m whiney, sleepy, and seriously attached to my gown…. ok, that’s enough of that…
Do you like old movies? I like old scary movies. It it’s got a werewolf, Frankenstein, my favorite Godzilla, I’m in love. Then there’s Sinbad, and all those monsters. I love Sinbad! I wanted to be Tarzan so bad. No, not Jane. All she did was put her hand ever so daintily to her mouth, and scream bloody murder. And faint… she fainted a lot. I wanted that monkey. Those elephants, I coulda called the elephants. The natives & I would have been big friends.
Ordered the Lone Ranger from Netflix. Yuck. It wasn’t an old one. It started when he & Tonto were kids. If I had watched that, it would have ruined my memories of the REAL Lone Ranger & Tonto. Everybody knows they were never kids.
So instead, we watched Godzilla & Raymond Burr. Ha! Not kidding. Made in 1956. Of course he thought he was in court, not a reporter. But it was really good. The plus was ol’Ted hadn’t got a hold of it… it was still in B&W.
Then for dessert we watched Godzilla vs. the Thing. It had the two tiny girls that speak together, with the fuzzy hats. It was made in Japan. I always root for Godzilla. Doesn’t matter if he’s tearing up the city. He’s terribly misunderstood.
I could watch Sinbad movies all day. Those monsters are so cool. Old Zorro movies are hard to find. They were great. Anything Lon Chaney was in was good. Or Boris Karloff. He had that great face and voice.
Now I’m in love with the new Alice. Didn’t see it at the theatre, which will be the biggest disappointment in my life.
Well, close to it. But I’ve watched it twice on TV. It just gets better. The way they blended the animation and the actors… well… it’s impressive. Gotta get the DVD.
Last night, while I couldn’t sleep (which happens often)… I came up with a new one. Sayings, I love sayings. Quote sounds entirely too important. I do sayings. Here goes… Critics know a little bit about a lot of subjects, but not a lot about anything. (PJ said it)
Did I tell you? I sold my first piece of art on PJ Hornberger Folk Art. Sold it to a woman who’s Mother use to buy my art so many years ago. Now if that’s not a huge compliment, I don’t know what is. Thrilled me to death… well, not quite.
But you know what I mean.
Put these on PJ Hornberger Folk Art last night. When you have time, take a peek.
Libby & Zelda will be happy to see you!

No art today, or yesterday. Yesterday was fun. Like Christmas. Found a cheap chest of drawers, a set of 3 old crock bowls. Great colors. Very good price. Went to The Antique Rose Emporium and got a few herbs, some plants. When it stops raining, the guy will be able to bring my dirt. I love to buy dirt.
Back to the blanket chest…nothing wrong with it, just too short. So, Richard’s added feet, and painting it flat black. I’m the designer/idea person. He’s the doer. Life is good.
My bedroom/office has entirely too much stuff… as in furniture. I’ve come up with all these ideas how to get rid of this wall to wall STUFF. Yeah! So while R’s over hauling the blanket chest, I’m unloading the furniture that’s going outta here. Also unloaded a small cupboard to replace the big one. I’m determined I’ll going to be able to see a wall. I’m almost there.
Changes make me very happy. My favorite thing is moving furniture. My back can testify to that. I even like to move art on the walls. It’s like everything is new. Right now I’m having a real problem trying to talk myself out of ditching everything and getting different/ new/whatever stuff. The antiques we’ve had forever. I think I’ve looked at them so long, I don’t see them anymore. Or maybe it’s just time for a rollover/change.
The art is what would be really hard to part with. Oh, my…. don’t know if I can do that. We shall see….
Hope you’re having a nice, safe 4th of July.

It’s been raining here for days. Not hard rain. It’s been so nice. Much cooler, the ponds are full, lots of green grass. The grass hoppers are thrilled. Compared to last summer, this is heaven. So no complaining here.
Encourage someone today/tomorrow/this week. You can’t believe what kind of difference it could make. Especially kids, but it’s a huge present for an adult also. It’s a present that doesn’t cost you a thing. I promise they never forget it.
Just a simple compliment is a present. I’ve got some of those from years ago. Still carrying them around with me. They make me smile. It’s only a present if you say it out loud to the person, not just think it. Gotta remember that part.
Sharing a smile with a total stranger is fun. Try it. You get the funniest responses. Sometimes they smile back, but it’s not required. One woman asked me if she knew me. That made me giggle, then she started giggling. A smile could be the only nice thing in someone’s entire day. Now that’s a big present. I want one of those.
Being kind is another present I love. When I think of the people that were kind to me, when I especially needed it, I still get tears. They touched my heart when I truly needed it. That list is long.
Do you have presents that you still have? Or that you gave and the act of it made you feel so good? Sometimes for me the giving is almost selfish. (smile) I get a bigger present by them allowing me the feeling of giving. Does that make sense?
Nice talking to you today. Thanks for letting me ramble on my day off…. xo PJ
