Tutorials…

I’m not great at writing step by step directions,  so read between the lines.  This won’t be a how to manual. :)  Instead,  I’m showing the steps I took to build/construct this sculpture with photos.  She’s not completed,  but I thought you might want to follow along on the journey.

I use Paper Clay.  They have a great website www.paperclay.com  check it out.  And don’t miss the artists that have work on there.  They are very impressive.

The styrofoam is hot glued together.  (low temp).  Then I carve it with a serrated kitchen knife/carving knives.  What ever works for me.  I sand it using a scrap piece of styrofoam.  Works great.  I put dowels/sticks in the joints for strength.  Also hot glued.  The ears are foam core scored,  shaped, taped with masking tape, hot glued to the body.

I clay half of her,  let her dry over night (fan), then work on the top half.  I did the wings the same as the ears, applied the clay, did some sculpting for detail.  The tail is big wire,  covered in tape,  then clay.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be putting the parts together,  patching cracks,  gesso.

The most important thing to remember… there is no wrong way to do this.  You learn some from this one, some from that one…. then do it your way.  If it’s your art,  you should be putting your mark on it, not mine.  Having fun is a requirement.  If you do,  it’ll show in the finished art piece.  Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.   xoxo PJ
